We had the opportunity to collaborate with ceramicist Bettina Chow to create a beautiful line of unique earthenware, available exclusively through Market by Modern Nest. Each piece is hand-thrown and kiln-fired by Bettina in her stunning home studio located in Phoenix, Arizona, where we had the chance to connect. Get to Know Bettina Chow
Can you tell us a little bit about your journey?
Bettina: I grew up in Chicago before spending time in both Boston and rural Illinois. My family and I moved to Arizona in 2010 for a job. In my prior careers, I have been a university professor, statistician, therapist, yoga instructor, and healthcare professional. I have two children; 15 and 11. I love good food, good music, a good drink, and a good laugh.
My ceramics journey began about 8 years ago. I found myself needing a creative outlet as I was parenting and working all day, every day. As soon as I sat down at the potters wheel, I was hooked.
How would you describe your style as an artist?
Bettina: I’m inspired by nature, travel, food and beverages. I want all of these moments to be woven together. I find my work speaks to bold but earthy expression. I want people to hold each piece and feel a connection to the earth.
What is your favorite part of the creative process?
Bettina: Opening the kiln to see if a concept I had worked out. OR, if something I didn’t think was going to work out, turns out beautifully. There is always a surprise in every kiln!
What do you love most about the pieces you created for The Market? Do you have a favorite?
Bettina: The Bamboo Vases are my absolute favorites. They were inspired by my extensive travels to Asia. These pieces unify the strength of bamboo with softer, more subtle tones that are warm and nurturing.
